Spark AR Studio is reminiscent of design tools such as Cinema 4D or Photoshop, where you can superimpose different layers in terms of functionality.
Thanks to the so-called patch editor, user interactions and animations can be added without the user having to code them himself.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create your filter in Spark AR Studio. Without further ado, here are the steps that explain how to create filters for Instagram.
Step by Step to Creating a Face Filter for Instagram with Spark AR
The first step is to download Facebook’s open-source software: Spark AR Studio. Then, of course, you have to install it on your computer.
When the software opens, you will find a menu that lets you discover already made effects. This allows you to see how they were created.
You just need to click on “Create Project” to start creating your own Instagram filter. You will then discover an interface that resembles that of 3D software or video compositing.
The video of a young man will allow you to test your creation in real-time.
Remember, the filters created here can be in augmented reality, hence the great usefulness of the head movements of your “mannequin”, which allow you to check that the filter is not lost from certain angles. It’s now time to create your filter.
In the window at the top left (Scene), you will be able to add elements such as lights, tracking layers, 3D objects, text, sound, etc. In the window at the bottom right (Assets), you will find the style attributes of your various elements: materials, textures, sequence animations, environments, etc.
In the right window, you will have access to all the settings of Scene and Assets. In the center, you will find the final rendering on the medium of your choice. We are offered several formats of smartphones and tablets, iOS, and Android.
In reality, this is only the tip of the iceberg; there are actually plenty of other windows, menus, and options to explore. Not to mention that you can create your filter with or without a code.
Imagine that your filter is finally finished. How are you going to share it with the rest of the world? This step is comfortingly simple (because yes, let’s be honest, creating your Instagram filter was not easy).
You just have to click on the Export button at the bottom left. You can, therefore, export and save your project wherever you want. You then get an .arexport file. Once your export is done, a new window will open.
By clicking on “Open Spark AR Hub,” the web page will open automatically. You will then submit your brand’s Instagram filter to Facebook to verify and then add to the application.
In the second tab, you need to add an icon to your effect. For this, it is imperative to respect a few very simple rules, an image size of 200 × 200 pixels minimum and the PNG or JPG formats.
Then add your file in .arexport. The rest of the process does not present any particular difficulties. Spark AR Hub will email you a link. This link will allow you to use your filter immediately.
This is great because you have to shoot a short video using your filter. When you go to the filters gallery, it is possible to watch a video demo before downloading one. It is, therefore, this demo that you must add to the file.
Once the file has been sent, you will have to wait between 5 and 10 days to know if our filter is accepted or not.
The first important point to note; a filter cannot be imported both on Facebook and on Instagram. You will therefore have to choose the one that suits you best. For us, it will be Instagram.
The second important point, the owner of the effect is either your Facebook profile or your Facebook page. But this name will not appear since it is the name of your Instagram account that will.
The third important point, if you do not want to waste one or two weeks for nothing since it is a Page that owns the filter, it is mandatory to check. If you do not do this, your filter will be “reset”, and you will have to repeat this step by checking the box.
Creating an Instagram filter for your brand can be an asset to your communication strategy on Social Networks. And the fact that this possibility is recent can help you stand out from your competition.
Remember, to start, you need to install Spark AR Studio on your computer and, then, get familiarized with the platform. Add your object and then effects. Finally, you need to test and then publish the effects. I hope you enjoyed this article and that you can now create your Instagram filters.
