Fennel Seeds

One of the major constituents of fennel seeds is phytoestrogens that is known to perform the function of female estrogen. This may lead to stimulation of contractions and is therefore prescribed after the delivery of the baby to cleanse the uterus.

Furthermore, they bear properties that are effective for treating hormonal imbalances and increase lactation. Therefore, it is advisable that fennel seeds should not be consumed by pregnant women.

Fenugreek Seeds

Pregnant women should avoid fenugreek seeds since it has a stimulant effect on the uterus. Owing to this property, intake of these seeds can lead to bloating, acidity, gastric problems as well as diarrhea. 

Furthermore, a high dose of fenugreek seeds can interfere with the normal growth of the fetus and lead to mental retardation upon birth.

Sesame Seeds

Due to there effectiveness in stimulating abortion, dry seeds like sesame are often used as natural medications. These seeds, when consumed with honey are known to have negative effects during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. 

This is because consuming sesame seeds stimulates contractions in the uterus, which may ultimately result in the expulsion of the fertilized ovum. However, black sesame seeds can be consumed in the later stages of the pregnancy as they help in easing out the delivery process. 


Another spice that should be excluded from the diet of pregnant women is licorice. This is because the spice contains glycyrrhizin, a component known to impair the placenta. Moreover, it allows glucocorticoids, which are the stress hormones, to enter the system of the baby. 


Asafetida is a commonly used household spice. However, it should be not be used in the diet of pregnant women. Consuming asafetida acts as a contraceptive which can create unnecessary complications in the pregnancy, thus jeopardizing the health of both the mother and the baby. 


A staple spice used in many street foods, Ajinomoto is more of a bane than a boon when we look at its impacts on the health of pregnant women. Excessive consumption of the spice during the months of pregnancy can negatively affect the brain development of the baby.


Consumption of turmeric during pregnancy still remains a grey area for most researchers. This is because an optimum level of fresh or dried turmeric is often prescribed to pregnant women. However, taking any supplements or capsules containing turmeric as a key ingredient should be avoided. 

They contain curcumin as an active ingredient, consuming large amounts of which can lead to alterations in the estrogen levels, causing contractions and even bleeding in certain cases.
