A bassinet, bassinette, or cradle is a bed specifically for babies from birth to about four months, and small enough to provide a “cocoon” that small babies find comforting. Here are couple bassinet examples :
Bassinets are smaller than regular cribs, usually they have wheels and also you can convert them to rocking bassinet as well (I suggest those convertible models personally). Usually new babies go to sleep easily but they also wake up easily too.
For example; after feeding, you burp your baby and put him/her to bassinet and if he wakes up you can easily rock the bassinet to put the little one back to sleep. And also you can take the bassinet in the living room during the day – it is easy to move bassinet with the wheels. And for me they look so cute 🙂
You can use bassinets usually first 3-4 months (till 15 pounds).in my case I used for 2 months because both my sons were more than 15 pounds when they were 2 months old.
When you check the bassinets in a shop, you will find a huge price range; starting from 50$ up to 500$. If you ask me, you can find a good one (with wheels and rocking capability) in 100-150$ range; you don’t need to spend more than this, if you decide to buy a bassinet.
We didn’t have one for our first kid. For the second one, we have found a ‘free’ one from one of our neighbors which worked great. When we are done with it, we have given it to one of our friends… I believe, it is still out there somewhere and a baby is still using it 🙂
[Update – October 2016]: We have our 3rd kid now, a baby girl 🙂 After 5 years we are back to starting point; changing diapers – sleepless nights etc. 🙂 And I have started updating my site again… The bassinet that I’ve mentioned above; back to our house again… After 3-4 kids ‘graduated’ from it (friend’s kids, their friend’s kids etc), now it’s our turn once more 🙂
